What should I do if a company HAS NOT applied for permits?
If a company has not yet applied for a permit in your community, but you live in an area where fracking activity is likely to begin, you can take the following steps:
- Familiarize yourself with the permitting process so that if or when companies do begin to seek permits you know how and when to get involved.
- Explore the possibility of using local rules as another form of protection and prevention. Familiarize yourself with your local ordinances or think about implementing new local rules if need be. Find out more in the section on Zoning.
- Community organizing: Reach out to leaders already organizing in your community or start organizing yourself.
- Immediately begin water testing and health surveys to get baseline data (see more info here on our section on health)
